Happy Birthday Sam!

A new sport coat

Sam has the unfortunate luck of a December birthday - right between Christmas and New Years when no one is really around. In the past I have managed to have a surprise party and combine his birthday with New Years Eve. This year we decided to do something with just the two of us, taking Katherine to my moms. Sam really wanted to go see a movie and he selected 4 that he was interested in and I was then going to make the final decision. This is due to the fact that we have vastly different movie preferences. We decided to go see Casino Royal at the new North Park theater.

BUT…Katherine got sick. She woke up with a fever and was pretty miserable all day. She was super clingy and did not want to be away from mom. She would not eat solids so she nursed all day. We decided that going out was not the best idea.

So, my parents came over for pizza from Picasso’s (very yummy steak and gargonzola pizza) and birthday pie. That is a tradition for Sam. He likes pie more than cake. Then Sam opened his gifts. After mom and dad left we watched Ice Age 2 - quite a bit different from a James Bond movie, but funny.

I am so sorry that the evening did not turn out as planned but I think Sam had a good Birthday anyway.

Katherine’s First Christmas - Part 2

Filed under: family, Sam's Family — Christy at 11:00 pm on Tuesday, December 26, 2006

After celebrating Christmas with Christy’s family, we traveled to celebrate with Sam’s family. We arrived Christmas day and everyone else was already there. We had our traditional Christmas dinner and hung out before dressing the kids in their Christmas PJs and sending them off for bed.

From December 2006

Christmas morning (actually the 26th) we got up earlier than I would have liked and opened stockings. Then we had our Christmas breakfast of biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon.

From December 2006

Opening presents was a little chaotic. We had 14 people, each with a pile or presents to open. We try to open one at a time but there were to many that we did not stick with that. Katherine again had a great time with opening gifts. It was a struggle to keep her from eating the paper.

From December 2006

Her big gift from Grammy, a wooden activity cube, was a hit with all of the kids. Katherine loves playing with it.

From December 2006

Later that afternoon some of up took a walk through the neighborhood to go play on the school playground.

The afternoon before we left Emily, Nathan and Uncle Justin worked on drawing. Uncle Justin is a talented artist, his medium of choice - skin. He is a tattoo artist in San Diego. You can see a little of his tattoo on his left hand. There was a funny dialogue between Emily and Uncle Justin that went something like this:

Uncle Justin mentions something about his job.

Emily, “You have a job, what do you do?”

Justin, “I draw on people.”

“With crayon or marker?”

“I use permanent ink”.

“So it won’t wash off?”

“No”

(With tears) “What happens if they changed their mind?”

Uncle Justin thinks Emily asks tough questions. I love the questions of children.

As a Chrsitmas gift for Sam’s mom we took a portrait of the 5 grandkids. Amazingly the photographer was able to get a picture of all 5 kids looking at the camera and not crying. Pam loved the picture.

Christmas Eve service

I know this was three weeks ago but I finally found the card reader for our smaller camera and downloaded these pictures. I will move it to the correct chronological place later. Christmas Eve our church had a wonderful morning and evening service. It was funny because afterward there were several families other than us that had planned to take a picture all dressed up at church with the large tree and nicely wrapped gifts. This is one of my favorite pictures of Katherine during the holiday season.

Katherine’s First Christmas (part 1)

Katherine and Hooligan posing in front of the tree.

I was not sure how much a 10 month old would get into her first Christmas. Would she just sit there overwhelmed and not interested or would she get into the excitement of opening presents? Katherine was a blast!

From December 2006

On Christmas Eve we went to Christy’s parents house to open presents and have dinner.

From December 2006

The first gift Katherine opened was a small overstuffed chair with a Pooh bear in it. She went crazy. She climbed up into the chair and started babbling to Pooh. I have never seen her talking to animated.

From December 2006

She also received a lot of books, a dress, some soft blocks and stacking cubes. She was interested in all of them and would help unwrap her gifts. She especially liked taking the tissue paper out of bags.

Christmas morning Christy’s parents came over to our house for breakfast and to open stockings and see what Santa brought. Katherine again had a blast. She received a Dinosaur Roll Around that you put balls into and they go through shoots and stairs making all kinds of noise. She sat on the couch and would take each thing from her stocking and moms stocking and put them behind her. What a fun morning!

10 months old

10 months old

10 months old

Katherine,

Today you are 10 months old. You are really growing up. I continue to be entertained by you as you are developing your personality. This month you really have started to show some of your personality. You love to snuggle with me and your daddy. One of our favorite times of day is in the morning when you play on our bed while we are trying to get just a little more sleep. Sometimes I wake up to your little finger curiously poking my eye or trying to fit into my nose.

You are learning to give kisses. They are rather wet and slobery, but so precious. You have also learned to point to other people’s noses. It is a game that both Nana and Daddy play a lot - “where’s my nose?” It is really funny when you combine these two skills and kiss my nose - actually, it ends up being more like you are trying to eat my nose, but cute none the less.

You love to laugh and to dance. When you are really happy you bounce up and down. You enjoy being tickled. You love to play with your dog. When I am holding you and I go to let Hooligan in from outside, your face lights up and you squeal with delight.

You do not like to have your diaper changed. You flip right over and squirm all over the changing table, reaching for anything you can get your hands on. I have become an expert at changing your diaper and getting you dressed while you are standing up or sitting down or even while you are on your tummy.

You enjoy bathtime. As soon as you hit the water you start to splash. Mom is still lazy and has you in the baby tub on the counter so you get water all over the mirror, counter and floor. That’s ok, we are going to tile the floor soon anyway! We also have bubbles that we play with at bathtime and you think it is fun to try to catch them.

You are starting to communicate a little. We took a sign language class which was a lot of fun since daddy was able to join us. You sign “all done” and “milk” though not always at the appropriate times. You also have a few words. You say “da” for dog and “mum” for me. I can’t wait until you can communicate more so that I know what is going on in that head of your.

A not very fun new thing is that we are starting to have to discipline you. It is really hard because I am not sure what you understand. Do you even know what “NO” means? Right now we tell you “no” and redirect you but you are not really catching on. The main thing we are having to correct is when you are trying to touch something you should not be touching (christmas tree, knife in the dishwasher, Hooligan’s food, mom’s hair . . . )You are just so curious.

From December 2006

Speaking of the Christmas tree…you are really enjoying the Christmas season, especially all of the lights and sparkly things. When we put up our tree, we put baby safe ornaments near the bottom knowing that you would be curious. You especially like to take off Hooligan, Jack and Trent, the three stuffed dogs. What I did not count on was that you would try to reach for the ornaments from the couch. That has been more of a challenge. You are so determined.

From December 2006
From December 2006

You have spent a lot of time playing with friends. In fact, I have started trading off with a few other moms so that we leave the kids with one mom and the other has the morning or afternoon free to get things done. You are doing much better with being away from me and staying happy when someone else is taking care of you. It is interesting to see the dynamics as you have friends at our house and you go to theirs. Hannah’s mom, Meg, and I noticed that when visiting one another’s house, the visitor whines and is clingly while the one who lives there is a bully. We also notice that you are a little bit of a bully in the church nursery. They moved you up to the 11-14 month room at 9 months because of this and the fact that you are so mobile. You were just climbing all over the place while the poor other kids were just sitting there. Yesterday Cale was over playing. It was funny because he is almost twice your size, but you climbed right over him to get where you wanted to go. Luckly Cale is pretty laid back and did not seem to care at all.

From December 2006

We are still working on eating. Dr. H said you may just be a baby that wants to feed herself but until you are able to gum/chew your food and swallow it, you be frustrated with baby food. We continue to try 2-3 meals a day. Some days you only eat 3-4 bites a meal and others you devour the whole serving. Your new favorite is bananas because you can feed them to yourself and successfully gum and swallow them. I usually try to feed them to you though or else you end up with them all over the place. Hooligan has learned that Katherine’s mealtime might be a good place for a snack. Today you were snacking on a teething biscuit while I was doing the dishes and all of a sudden I heard a loud crunch. I looked over and you were happily sharing your snack with Hooligan. Sadly, mommy had to take it and throw it in the trash.

From December 2006

I continue to be amazed at how much I enjoy being your mom, even when things are difficult. You are a precious gift from God.

4 great years

December 21, 2002

Today is our 4th anniversary. I cannot believe that it has already been 4 years. I was single for so many more years than I wanted to be so it seems weird that I am having a 4th anniversary and I have a 10 month old. Time sure flies when you’re having fun.

Highlights of previous years have included trips, buying a home or buying a car. Hands down the highlight of this year was the birth of Katherine and becoming parents. It has changed a lot of things about ourlife and our marriage, but we both enjoy being parents more than we realized. We pray that our marriage remains the most important relationship in our family even when being parents can be all consuming.

I can’t wait to see what the next year holds. Love you Sam!

Vickery Christmas

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christy at 10:33 pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2006

Our community group adopted a family for Christmas. This family has recenly moved to the Vickery area of Dallas from Burma. We received a list of some things that they wanted, mainly warm winter clothes.

Bri and I delivered the gifts to the family the week before Christmas. We had filled my trunk and the back of Bri’s SUV with gifts. It was quite a stash of clothes, books, toys and household items.

This family consisted of mom (21), dad (26) and two daughters age 5 and 6 mo. Their apartment was very sparse (but of course they had a TV). It was a two bedroom apartment but they felt that it was too big and are going tomove into a smaller, more cozy place when their initial assistance from the International Refugee Commission runs out. I came away really appreciating all of the material things that I have.

We were not able to communicate much because of the language barrier. We had a case worker with us but she more answered our questions rather than interpret our conversation with the family. It was easy to see the joy on thier faces as they opened our gifts. The 5 year old was especially excited as she opened gifts for the entire family.

Merry Christmas

I love the Christmas season. I have way too many decorations in the attic that I have accumulated over the years. I love the Christmas tree and wish I could leave it up all year long. I love the music and the fact that our Lord’s birth is sung in the most pagan of places even if most don’t really think about the words. I love giving gifts and it is fun (most of the time) to think of and find the perfect gift for all of my loved ones.

This is our Christmas card picture for this year. Merry Christmas.
