Getting Zzzzzzzz’s

Filed under: Katherine — Christy at 10:22 pm on Friday, December 15, 2006

We are working on Katherine’s sleeping. Over time she has regressed from sleeping 8-10 hours through the night to waking every 3 hours. When she wakes up she wants to nurse. Since she has always been so small, I have nursed her every time because I figured she needed the calories, but what that did was not allow her to learn to fall back asleep on her own. So, now, even if she is not hungry she wants to nurse because that is the only way she can fall back asleep. It is very exhausting for her mommy.

I was not really excited about letting her cry it out. I have tried it some before and she cried for an hour and was no closer to giving in and falling asleep. So, I read an entire book about how to get them in a better sleep pattern without crying. There were a lot of useful ideas about setting a very strict routine, having a lovey . . . BUT after reading it, I was not sure that I believed it could work. You were supposed to do a sleep log every ten days to not improvement and rework your plan. I wanted to try to have her on a better schedule before we were out of town over the holidays.

So, in a act of desperation I told Sam we were going to make changes and it would include crying. Two nights ago I somehow was able to nurse her, keep her awake and then have her fall asleep. That was at 9:30 (I know, we have a late bedtime - we will work on that next). She then woke up at midnight. I was in bed and put in my earplugs and let her cry. She cried really hard for about 20 minutes. Then for the next hour she would fall asleep for 10-20 minutes and then cry for 10-20 minutes. Then she slept until 5:15. I had told Sam that for a baby that was used to waking every three hours I could not let her go all night without eating (plus I would not like the way I felt). So we decided that I would feed her if she woke up after 3am. So, we felt like it was a failry successful first night.

Last night I again nursed her and got her to fall asleep not while nursing. But, when I laid her in the crib she started to cry. So, Sam went in to rock and cuddle until she fell asleep. At midnight she cried for 30 seconds before falling asleep. Sam and I looked at each other and thought, “could it really be this easy?” She woke up at 3 exactly and then slept until 6:45 when Sam got up to go to work.

I know we are no where close to solving our sleep problems, but we are on our way. Please pray for us. It is hard to listen to your sweet baby cry. We really hope to have her sleeping through the night again soon. The good thing is that when she woke up the next morning she did not seem to be mad or holding any grudges for making her cry for so long.

Da da da

I think Katherine is saying her first word. She had been babbling a lot for a long time. She says things that could represent words, but it is so hard to know if she is intentional.

Some of the possible words that she says are mum or mamamamama, dadadadada and ga or da. You may wonder wht these words are. Mum or mamama is referring to me and she does seem to do it at the appropriate times. dadada obviously refers to her dad and ga or da refers to dog or Hooligan. She has said that when Hooligan was around her high chair.

Officially I count her first word today when she was at Kathy’s house. She was in the high chair and their dog Ranger walked in. Kathy said that Katherine pointed and said, “da”. So, her first word is “dog.” Pretty cool.

Sledding

I think this is just the cutest picture ever. I love Katherine’s Santa suit. She will probably not get to see real snow or really go sledding this year but it sure looks fun!

8 month pictures

Mom's 8 month portrait

Mom's 8 month portrait

I am a little late getting this posted. I keep forgetting to scan the pictures. Anyway, my mom saved several of my dresses. Now, Katherine is wearing them, at least to have her picture taken. This was my first Easter dress. You can tell that I am a child of the 70’s by the bright yellow and the daisy chain.
From Portraits
What I think is amazing is that the photographer captured Katherine with the same expression on her face that I had 34 years ago. Looking at the pictures of us at the same age, in the same dress, with the same expression makes you see any similarities and differences between us. I personally think we don’t look that much alike. I think Katheirne is all Sam.

We also took a picture of her in a more modern dress and I thought it turned out very cute as well.

The Terry Family

The Terry Family

The Terrys!?!?!

I ordered our Christmas card pictures online from Sams Sunday night. They were supposed to be ready on Monday after 11. I did not get a chance to get over there until Tuesday at 11 and they were not ready. So though I went into Sam’s to pick up pictures that I had already paid for online, I shopped while they were printing my pictures and managed to spend 7 on various things. I was in a rush to make it tomeet a friend at the Dallas Museum of Art so when she pulled the pictures off the machine I did not look at them. Tonight when I got them out to work on them, I found 60 Christmas cards belonging to the Terry family. Now I get to go back over to Sams tomorrow to figure out where my pictures are. So, Terry family, if you have my pictures, will you please bring them back?

Connection Group

Ben, Katherine and Sue

For the past two and a half years I have been a part of a wonderful group at church called a Women’s Connection group. These groups are designed to connect women of different ages and stages as they fellowship and learn from one another. (If that sounds a bit like an advertisement, it is because I was the chairman of the program it’s first two years). Anyway, I have been in a group that began with the focus of, “Help, the honeymoon is over, let the marriage begin.” All of us had been married 1-3 years and had no kids. We met once a month at Sue’s home where we would eat dinner and talk about various things relating to life and marriage. Now half of the group members have kids which sometimes attend our monthly meetings. Last month Katherine and her friend Ben attended. Sue loves to play with the babies and she was carrying both of them around as the moms ate. Thanks Sue for 2.5 great years. I can’t wait to come over next week for our Christmas dinner.

Snowbunny and snowman

Snowbunny and snowman

I love the Christmas season. I have over 10 boxes of decorations in the attic. One thing that is fun is dressing Katherine in all of her winter and holiday attire. Today for church she wore an all white sweater outfit. She was so snuggly and cute. She reminded me of a snowflake. This picture was taken before church as we were getting ready to walk out the door. I knew that by the time we got home the outfit would be filthy from crawling around the nursery floor. Who knew that she would sleep for the first 45 minutes and be content in her carseat for another 45 minutes?

Friends from teh Legacy Class

Friends from teh Legacy Class

The Legacy class has been a huge part of our first four years of marriage. We are sad that it is no longer meeting but we are so happy that we continue to get togehter with the many couples that we have become close to over the past four years.

This weekend we celebrated our 4th Christmas with a pot luck and ornament exchange. Things get nasty when there are ornaments to be traded. This year we had 6 kids and it was fun to see them all playing together.

Merry Christmas!!

The kids are not excited about posing for their picture.

Santa Visit #2

Filed under: Katherine — Christy at 11:05 pm on Friday, December 1, 2006

The weather outside is frightful (for Texas at least) so our MOPS was cancelled today. My small group decided to take a field trip to Northpark to hear Santa’s story time, see Scrooge and eat lunch. After the group left, we decided to give Santa another visit hoping that Katherine would be happy this time.

I am happy to report that it went much better. Katherine did not smile for the camera, but she was happy. I now have a good picture for the scrapbook.
