Katherine and the other Hannah

Playing in the Pantry

It is kind of confusing. Katherine has a cousin named Hannah and a friend named Hannah. The friend Hannah comes over to play a lot. Her mom Meg and I trade off watching the girls so that one of us can have a few hours each week to get things done without the distraction of a baby.

Today was so much fun. They are 10 and 11 months old and into everything. Our den is a total mess with every single toy out of the toybox and onto the floor. What is so fun from today is that they are actually getting along and playing together. Previously whoever’s turf they were on would be the bully. Today they are sharing nicely. If one girl goes to investigate a new toy, the other will follow, but not try to steal it (usually). It helps that we have so many toys around that they don’t have to steal. Amazingly I have been able to accomplish more today on my computer than most other days because Katherine is entertained.

Katherine loves her “Play Silk”

We look forward to raising these two girls together to be great friends.

Early to bed…

early to rise?

Tonight Katherine was kind of fussy and acting tired so I changed her diaper and put her down for a nap. Then I went to make dinner. She was crying and I was feeling like a horrible mom. I thought maybe I misread her cues and I was just at a tired and frustrated point of the day where putting her in her crib to cry was a good solution for me, not her. I was just about to go get her when she was quiet and had fallen asleep - at 5:50! I thought it was a nap but it is now 11 and she has not made a peep. What I feel bad about is that she is not in her pajamas or even anything good to sleep in. She is wearing the plaid jumper in the next post but without the tights. I went in and covered her up and figure she will be ok.

Now, the mystery - what time will she wake up? I will keep you posted and I am headed to bed right now in case it is pretty early.

Update - Amazingly Katherine did not wake up until 6 am! Amazing! She slept 12 hours without waking up once. That is a first for her. I am now a firm believer in the Sleep Lady Shuffle.

11 Months

11 months old

11 months old

Dear Katherine,

You are 11 months old today. Yikes! I almost have a one year old. Where has this year gone? It has sure flown by. Each month I say “This is my favorite age.” But each month it gets better.

Katherine, you are so much fun! You are growing up and changing so rapidly. You love to laugh and smile. Things that make you laugh and smile are tickling, Hooligan, peek-a-boo, and your Pooh doll. You think it is so much fun to crawl to the fridge and stand up, looking in when it is open. You are learning to make all kinds of funny noises. It sure sounds like you are carrying on a conversation, but no one else knows what you are saying. You do actually say dog, mama and dad.

You love to give kisses. You even make kissing “mmmma” noises like we do. You love to find noses. You even know where a nose on Pooh and Raggedy Ann are.

You are sleeping so much better and for this I am very thankful. It took about a week of training, but you are now sleeping from about 8 until 6 or 6:30 without waking up at all. You are still not a great napper but we will work on that next. You do take a nap every day, but the time and duration are not consistant. You also really should be taking two naps at your age and usually you do not.

Even though you get up earlier than I would like, my favorite time of the day with you is in the morning. You are alert and so much fun. Usually when you wake up I go in and nurse you and then we play in your room until daddy gets up.

You have started all kinds interesting habits at the dinner table. You blow bubbles and try to spit your food out sometimes. You really like to try to hand off some of your food to Hooligan. You laugh and think it tickles when she licks your hand. You also have started to scream when you are done and we are not. These are not good things sweetie. We have also decided that right now is not a good time to go out to eat. We are having a hard time getting you to sit in a high chair long enough for us to eat at a restaurant with a waiter.

You are doing better at actually eating though. We usually get three meals in. Some of them are small and some of them are larger. You like almost everything, just not much of it. One thing that you do not like is yogurt. I find this weird because every other baby I know loves Yo Baby. We are working hard on having you feed yourself. Your pincher grasp is good but a lot of times you are more interested in playing with your food and not eating it. Recently you have tried whole wheat pasta, chicken, bread and dehydrated peas. You love you snacks the best. You like Veggie Booty, teddy puffs and your all time favorite is your Gerber puffs. You especially like it when they are in your snack trap and I let you take it with you in a store or the car. Your face lights up when I bring out the snack trap.

You are still nursing a lot, but not in the middle of the night! I am fine with still nursing you and really enjoy it. I am not in a hurry to wean you and plan to let you lead that (within reason). You only have three teeth, two on bottom and one on top. You look a little uneven but it is cute.

You are getting even more mobile. We keep thinking you will walk before long. You are a super fast crawler and you love to pull up on anything and cruise. You are getting better at letting go when we you are standing. You are happier now that you are so mobile because you are more in control of your life. If you want to play with a certain toy, you crawl over and get it. If mommy leaves the room, you follow her. If you want to pet Hooligan, you go on over and do it. You have also learned how to get down from the couch or other chairs which is good but you don’t have it down perfectly so I am scared you will fall. You also don’t realize that things like the bed are too tall to get off of in the same manner.

You are getting into everything! Every night I put all your toys in your toy basket and every day you pull them all out. You love to open and close all the cabinets in the kitchen and have learned which ones have the fun things to play with. You love to take papers out of the office trash. You reach for whatever mom and dad have when you are on their lap. You are just so curious.

You are in a weird phase where sometimes you are very attached to mommy and sometimes you are fine being away. We never know which it will be. The other night Daddy came home and your face lit up and you reached toward him but as soon as I passed you over, you started to cry and wanted me again. The previous day you had been in the church nursery for a few hours with no problem. It is certainly easier to leave you places now that you are eating solids.

We are having to try to learn how to discipline you and it is hard. It is not that we have a hard time telling you no and setting boundaries, it is just hard to get you to respond. You are not really comprehending “No” yet and you are not able to comprehend the cause and effect relationship of punishment for doing something wrong. The most frustrating things that we are having to correct you on would be getting into the dog food and trying to play with the computer or any type of cord that you find like a computer mouse.

We pray that we would be wise parents in how we correct and discipline you. We want to help you to grow into a godly little girl who is respectful of authority and obedient as well as we want you to be safe.

You have several new motions. You now point to things. You can clap though you don’t do it often and you just learned to wave.

You have had a wonderful month. This month you celebrated Christmas 3 times. You have a lot of new toys and books. This also meant that you were able to spend a lot of time with your family. We love to have you around your extended family and cousins and are so glad that we live close enough to see many of them frequently.

Katherine and Hannah

We had George, Shannon and the kids over for dinner this weekend. Hannah is now almost 5 months old so she was enjoying Katherine’s exersaucer and Katherine was enjoying pulling up and watching her play.

Snow Day!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christy at 9:52 pm on Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Today was one of those nasty weather days. You may have even seen Dallas mentioned today on the national news because of all of the weather related accidents. The Fort Worth side had more snow and the Dallas side had more sleet. But, the sleet still looks pretty white so we went outside with Katherine and Hooligan for a few pictures. With some careful and creative photography, manipulating the setting and camera angle, it actually looks like we have some of the white stuff.

Good Night, Sleep Tight

Filed under: Katherine — Christy at 9:33 pm on Wednesday, January 17, 2007

You may remember that we have been having some sleep issues with Katherine. She had regressed and was waking up every 3 hours. So, after all of our holiday travel ended, we started a new sleep routine. I read all the books out there and some were too harsh and some were too wimpy. I finally found a suggested solution that I thought I could handle and would possibly work. It is from the book, ”Good Night, Sleep Tight” .

There are several things that this book suggests. First, do NOT nurse your baby to sleep. This is something that I have always known was a bad habit for us, but when she fell asleep so easily I just did it. So, you are supposed to put her to sleep “drowsy but awake”. Easier said than done. We now have a routine where I nurse her and then leave the room. Then Sam gets her ready for bed and reads to her and puts her to sleep.

The second thing suggested is to do the “sleep lady shuffle” where for the first three nights you sit in a chair by the crib. The next three in a chair between the crib and the door. The next three in a chair outside the door but within sight. Then, when we put Katherine down and She cries because she is not used to it, we are there where we can touch and speak to her without getting her out of the crib.

Tonight we are on day 7 and the chair just moved outside the room. It has gone better and better each night. Remember, before this I would nurse Katherine to sleep and then go in there 3 times in the night and nurse her again to get her back to sleep. She cried a lot the first two nights because I would not nurse her. But last night she went to sleep at 9:30 (later bedtime than usual because she was asleep in her carseat from 7:30-8:45) and did not wake up until 5:30. Then she crid for about 1 minute and fell back asleep before I went in. She woke up 15 mintues later and I went in there for less than 2 minutes before she fell back asleep until 6:40. So, that was a great night - 9 hours of solid sleep plus the hour in the carseat. It is still not as much as I would like, but it is improving!

Learning to Share

Here you go Hooligan

Here you go Hooligan

Katherine can be such a sharing baby. (She also can be quite the bully) She love to share her puffs. She shares them with mom and she shares them with Hooligan.

From January 2007

Of course Hooligan loves this. When Katherine eats her puffs out of the snack trap, Hooligan hovers, knowing that there will be some dropped before long. Katherine sticks her entire hand in and tries to get as many out as possible. Sometimes this pulls the lid off and then Hooligan gets a lot of puffs. She also likes to hand them to Hooligan as well. It is really quite cute.

Hooligan is fine with sharing her food as well. Twice this week we have caught Katherine with dog food in her mouth. Not so good. At least we buy the really expensive, human grade food.

First Christmas #3

Filed under: Christy's Family — Christy at 7:55 pm on Monday, January 15, 2007

Yes, Katherine was able to celebrate Christmas a third time, this time in California with Christy’s family. It was really a loaded holiday weekend with a baby shower and Christmas.

Katherine did really well on the flight even though she did not have her own seat. She did not fuss but was very squirmy. Neither one of us were able to listen to our ipod, read magazines or even drink our airline soft drink with much success. By the way, they don’t even give you peanuts or pretzels anymore! Katherine just bounced back and forth between us, crawling on the tray, playing with toys, ripping pages out of the American Way magazine and trying to wrap ipod headphones around her neck. It was a tiring 3.5 hours of my life.

We went to Will and Jaime’s new house which is very nice. I am jealous of their large open kitchen and den. I also am jealous of how uncluttered it is. I really need to clean out and get rid of stuff.

We ate out a lot this weekend. That is getting harder and harder with Katherine. She just does not want to sit still for the duration of a restaurant meal. It was especially hard in California because of the time difference. She hits her fussy time at about 8 when it is time for bed. Out there that was at 6 pm when we were heading out for dinner.

Jaime and Will had a great baby shower. It was at their house and they had a ton of people. The invited both men and women and kids, there was a huge spread of food and wine and beer. They received a ton of great gifts. Mom and I brought so many gifts for the shower and Christmas that we had two extra suitcases!

After the hubub of the shower, we celebrated Christmas. Katherine is becoming a pro at opening gifts and has a great time. She got an adorable outfit from Old Navy that she wore the next day but we somehow did not get a picture.

Will and Sam spent part of one evening putting together the swing and stroller. There were parts all over the place but they successfully put it all together. Katherine tested them both out.

Katherine was a lot of fun and did all kinds of funny things. Sometimes she would wander off and we would find her in the bathroom with a pile of tiolet paper on the floor. We have moved our toilet paper rolls, but Uncle Will has not.

She loved thier dog Trent. Trent is a huge part lab, part german shepherd mix. Trent is so sweet and did great with Katherine. Katherine would follow him around and try to pet him but he would always try to get away. Katherine also was drawn to Trents water and food bowl, she even tested out the dog food but did not like it and threw it up!

The trip home was much smoother because the flight was not full and Katherine had her own seat. I am starting to think that in the future we may go ahead and purchase a ticket for her.

Our new washer

Our new washer

Exciting news for me, the stay at home mom - we have a new washer! It was my main Christmas present from Sam. Our previous washer had only 2 cycles - regular and permanent press. I had not idea what the difference between them was and I knew for sure I could not wash a lot of my clothes on those cycles. So, every once in a while I would take a load of delicates to be washed at my moms. Sam said when he bought the machine as a bachelor he had no need for fancy cycles. What he did not realize is that a lot of his sweaters also have to be washed on a gentle or delicate cycle.

So, tonight I washed my first load of sweaters and currently I have a load of diapers in the wash. Washing diapers in a front loader with different cycle options will take a little more trial and error but I am sure I will figure it out.

I foresee a new microwave in our future as well. Tonight there were some sparks and it was not because we had put metal in there. Hmmm - maybe it is time to redo the entire kitchen as well. We did discuss that we would start that project when appliances started breaking and the dishwasher is pretty pitiful as well. What do you think Sam?

The bell

Ring!

Ring!

We have not done a great job in many aspects of training our beloved dog Hooligan. She has really lived up to her name in many ways. One thing we did do well was train her to ring a bell hanging from the back door to let us know that she wants to go outside. Our dog trainer suggested it and it was learned very quickly. Sometimes it gets annoying because she wants in and out so often but it is better than barking or scratching.

I knew it would happen eventually - Katherine has found the bell and she is tall enough to reach it. All kids who come for a visit love the bell. Now we will have to teach Katherine not to ring it or else it will defeat the purpose of having Hooligan so well trained.
