Comments on our life, mostly our daughter.

Motherhood is . . .

Filed under: Christy's Family — Christy at 7:12 am on Thursday, September 6, 2007

One of the many blogs that I read weekly has a monthly group writing project where different readers write on a given theme on their blog. I have yet to participate in the project but this month decided to give it a go. The theme for September is “What is Motherhood?”.

Motherhood is . . .

I remember when I was only about 10 my Aunt Beverly asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without thinking I said, “a mommy”. Her comment was that it showed what a great mommy I had if that was what I wanted to be someday too. I did not realize that most of the world did not consider a mommy a real job and that most people would be looking more for an answer like doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc.

Well, twenty-three years later I finally was able to grow up and be a mommy. That meant that first I had to put in 9 long years at my other job as a junior high school teacher but that job has given me experience and perspective will help me in the mothering of my daughter, especially as she gets older. There were both a lot of successes and a lot of failures that I observed and will hopefully be lessons to me.

As a mother I have come to realize even more what a great mother I have. I am lucky that she lives close to me so we are able to spend a lot of time with Nana. It has been fun to see her become a grandmother and to dote all over Katherine. Being a mother has made me appreciate my mother so much more. We have always called her Mrs. Worst Case Scenario because she is always warning us of the bad things that can happen. Now that I am a mom, I also think of those bad things. I love that my mom was always there for us. She did not work and so she was there when we got home from school, she went on field trips, was a room mother and would play with us and help us with our homework. I have learned that quality time with kids is so vital. I learned this from my mother.

I also learned that you can never show too much affection or tell a child you love them too many times. I never doubted my parent’s love. I find myself kissing Katherine and telling her I love her all day long. I know I got this from my mom.

I am so glad that I am a mommy. I know it is a huge responsibility and I pray that I will do a good job. Ultimately it is my job to make sure my child is loved, secure and her physical needs are taken care of. I have to trust God to protect her, keep her well and that she will come to know Him as her personal savior some day.

I love you Katherine. I love you Nana.

Cousin visit

Filed under: Uncategorized, Christy's Family — Christy at 12:47 am on Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Will, Jaime and Sophia were in town this weekend. Will had to come into town for work. Jaime and Sophia were not going to join him but since he works for an airline and they can come free, they came as a surprise. I knew about it a few days prior because I need to go pick them up with a car seat base. We beat mom and dad to the house so Jaime and Sophia hid on the back patio. Mom and dad were so excited to see them.

Don’t you just love those blue eyes?

We had a very enjoyable visit. Last time they were here for dad’s surgery so it was a more stressful visit and we spent a lot of time at the hospital. This time we were able to go out to eat, grill out and visit the arboretum and spend a lot fo time just hanging out.

I think I want to give Sophia a hug.

Katherine was very curious about her cousin. When Sophia was on the floor, Katherine did try to lay on top of her and she tried to pick off her strawberry birthmark. Luckily Sophia was pretty good natured about it.

Two Hairs

Filed under: Katherine, Christy's Family — Christy at 10:07 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2007

Today Katherine reached a major milestone for my family. She wore “two hairs”. Growing up one of my family nick names was “Christy Two Hairs”. The story was that one of the first times mom put my hair in pigtails I said, “look mom, Christy has two hairs”. The name stuck and so did the hair style. Until age 10 or 11 there were very few times that my hair was not in “two hairs”. Probably it was down only for school pictures and Easter. I did not mind because my mom would not let my hair be any shorter than the middle of the back and it was HOT to wear down. There was a brief time when I wanted to have corn rows like my friend LaTonya. Mom let me go to school one day with a lot of little braids. I am sure it looked horrible. Then I was Pippi Longstocking for Halloween one year but thatwas really just a variation of pigtails. I always wanted to wear my hair in a french braid but until I learned to do it myself I was out of luck. In fifth grade I decided that I was too old for pigtails and I wanted to get my hair cut like my older half sister Anne. She had a bi-level. You know where the hair feathers back. Well, needless to say, it was horrible. My hair is so straight and fine that it did not hold it’s style. I pretty much had a horrible mullet that took several years to recover.

So, why do I tell you about my pig tails? Well, today I put Katherine’s hair in pig tails for the first time. I did not really think her hair was long enough but decided to try it. They lasted several hours. I thought it was very cute. So, today, Katherine has two hairs, just like her mommy did.

The Entire Family

Will, Jaime and Sophia came in town for dad’s surgery. It was great to have some family time while they were here. It was the first time that ll 8 of us had been together.

Of course we had to take a trip to El Fenix, a family tradition. Katherine decided to feed herself with a spoon. She tries this at home but always turns the spoon upside down so that teh contents spill out before it makes it to her mouth. Today at El Fenix she did great because refried beans stick to the spoon. Refried beans are not in her usual diet.

Happy Birthday Nana!

Filed under: Katherine's comments, Christy's Family — Christy at 3:12 pm on Friday, April 20, 2007

Last weekend was my Nana’s birthday. Nana and Pops picked me up from the church nursery and took me to their house while mommy and daddy worked in the nursery. Mommy wanted me to be able to eat lunch and take a nap. When Mommy and Daddy got to Nana and Pop’s house, I was in fact taking a nap. I did not want to miss out on lunch though so I woke up before they were done.

Nana opened her presents. I gave her three books that had sweaters, hats and ponchos to crochet for Sophia and me.

Mommy and Daddy had a meeting to go to so I stayed and played with Nana and Pops. We read stories and played with my fish. It is so fun. I stick the fishing pole in the fishing bowl and then the fish stick to the pole when I pull it out. Nana is teaching me the colors of all of the fish.

Watch out Katherine -

Sophia is catching up!

Sophia had her 2 month appointment today and Aunt Jaime tells me that she weighs 11 pounds, 7 oz (64th %) and is 24.25 inches (97th %). In comparison, at 2 months Katherine weighed 9 pounds, 9.5 oz (15%) and was 22 inches (45%). Right now at 14 months I am guessing Katherine weighs about 17.5 pounds.

So, watch out Katherine, Sophia is gaining on you, and fast!

Here is a cute picture of Sophia and Uncle Will at Lake Tahoe for her first snow.

Egg Hunt #3

Filed under: Katherine, Christy's Family — Christy at 10:36 pm on Tuesday, April 10, 2007

By the end of the weekend, Katherine was an expert at hunting for Easter Eggs. After church we went to Christy’s cousins house for lunch. They have two boys who are in elementary school. They had an Easter egg hunt for the boys and Katherine. Nana and Pops could not believe how good at getting the eggs Katherine was.

Easter 1973

Look who else did not enjoy their first visit with the Easter Bunny. He does look kind of frightening.

Thanks to Nana for the vintage photo. Nice outfit Nana.

From Sophia

My cousin Sophia Marie was born this morning at 7:01am in California. She weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. That is a lot bigger than me. You can see that we look nothing alike. She has dark hair, dark eyes and dark skin. She is so cute! I cannot wait to meet my new cousin.
